Qui est PAMELA?


Pamela is a mystery to me. Her beautiful Vogue single from 1969 is one that has seemed to escape almost everybody, including L’Encyclopédie du Rock Français . It’s even absent from Vogue’s catalogue (at least the online one).

Poor Pamela, it seems no care went into the design of her record sleeve. The record’s cover is shocking in its dullness; Pamela’s facial features are hard to make out, the cheap black and white photo makes it look like a photocopy and the back only lists the songs, with no credits or the label’s usual plugs for other Vogue artist releases. I am just baffled. Maybe this copy was a promo release? Who knows.

Too bad because the record is very nice. Sure, Pamela didn’t have the greatest voice but the arrangements are pretty and she does a remarkable cover of Antoine‘s beautiful “Une autre autoroute”.

(Which reminds me: I should do a giant post about all the Antoine covers I have and invite people to post theirs!) :)

If anybody has any info on Pamela, I would love to know. Tell me!

    Ooohohoohohohhhhooo: la trouvaille!!! Corrigez-moi si je me trompe, mais la face A (Le jour où) semble être un cover -ou du moins fortement inspirée- d’une rare pièce par le groupe espagnol Los Pekenikes (Cerca de las Estrelas) que je respecte pour ce seul tube.     Superbe découverte! Je termine l’autobiographie de Antoine et malheureusement ce dernier ne mentionne pas cette Pamela. La bio est riche est anecdoctes et détails; je la recommande! Antoine souligne par contre que son impressario et Wolfsohm (Dutronc, Hardi) recherchaient des artistes pouvant imiter le style des Élucubrations (comme ce serait le cas pour Édouard, Benjamin, etc.). On a tenté d’endisquer la copine d’Antoine, mais devant son refus à la dernière minute, peut-être ot-ils opté pour cette Pamela…?

    C’est assez rare une pochette de ce genre pour vogue, t’as raison. Ça fait plutôt british, ou chanteuse méditéranéenne. J’aime bien sa voix.

    À propos des élucubrations, ne pas oublier Jean Yanne et ses quatres personnifications d’Antoine (dont une version coiffeur homosexuel!).

    I know it is a very slow reaction, but I only just discovered your site..
    About the Pamela Mystery: I really can’t add much except that it is likely that this is a Belgian record. The VB code stands for Vogue Belgique. Not that this solves th emystery, but at least it puts us a bit more in the right direction..:-)
